GACLOX is a brand spectrum formulation of Ampicillin and penicillinase Cloxacillin. Gaclox exhibits bacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive organisms such as Staphyococci (including pencillinase producing strains), Streptococci, D. Pneumoniae, Clostridia, B anthracis and most strains of Enterococcis, and Gran-negative organisms such as Influenza, Brucella melitensis and Brucella abortus, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella, Shigella, E.coli and Neiseria species.
Absorption and Excretion:
Ampicillin and Cloxacillin are individually acid stable and are easily absorbed when administered before meals to produce good serum and urine concentrations. Higher and more prolonged levels may be achieved in patients with normal renal function by the concurrent and administration of probenecid.
Gaclox is predominantly excreted by glomnerular filteration and renal tubular secretion.
Respiratory tract infections, Ear, Nose and Throat infections, Urinary tract infections, Gastro-intestinal infections, Skin and Soft Tissue infections, Pelvic infections, Septicaemia, Endocarditis, Orthopaedic infections.
Dosage and Administration:
Administer: ½-1hour before meals
Children: up to 2years - ½ teaspoonful every 6 hours
2 to 6years - 1 teaspoonful (5ml) every 6 hours
6 to 12 years - 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls 6 hours or as directed by physician
Adult: 1-2 capsules 6 hour or as directed by the physician
As with other penicillin, side effects are usually of a mild and transitory nature. They may include diarrhea, indigestion or occasionally rash-either urticarial which suggest penicillin hypersensitivity or erythematous. An ethemtous rash may be caused patients with glandular fever. In either case, it is advisable to discontinue therapy.
Preparation of the Suspension:
To make 60ml/100ml of the suspension add 40/75ml of boiled and cooled water, invert and shake the bottle until all powder is dispersed. Alternatively gradually add boiled and cooled water to half of the bottle. Shake well and slowly add more water up to make on the label. SHAKE WELL BEFORE TAKING EACH DOSE.
The dry powder should be stored below 250C. The suspension should be used within 7 days of preparation and stored in a cool place preferably in a refrigerator.
Reduced dosage is required with impaired renal functions e.g renal failure, neonantes and premature infants.
